Milan, Italy (PRWEB) February 06, 2013
Last Tuesday, January 29th, the winner of the 2013 Artists for Frescobaldi award was announced in Milan. Elisa Sighicelli won the first prize of this new award with the piece Untitled (an iron barrel). The award ceremony took place at The Stelline Foundation, a partner of the project. The artworks were exhibited at The Stelline Foundation until February 3rd, and will now be on display at the Marchesi de Frescobaldi estates.
The inspiration of Frescobaldi Art Director Tiziana Frescobaldi and overseen by project curator Ludovico Pratesi, Artists for Frescobaldi is dedicated to the promotion of the most promising contemporary artists who use new expressive tools, such as photography and video installations, to express their creativity. The three Italian artists who vied for the first annual award were required to focus on the CastelGiocondo estate in Montalcino, where the Frescobaldi family produces the famed Brunello di Montalcino wine.
The Artists for Frescobaldi award is tied to the Frescobaldis longstanding patronage of the arts. The family has been linked to art and artists for 700 years, including past connections with Donatello, Michelozzo Michelozzi, and Filippo Brunelleschi. With Artists for Frescobaldi, the family is making an effort to support contemporary artists as Tiziana Frescobaldi wants to carry on the family tradition with the creation of new contemporary works linking wine and art.
Regarding the three artists who competed, Tiziana Frescobaldi issued the following statement:
Thank you Rä di Martino, Giovanni Ozzola, and Elisa Sighicelli for taking part in the first edition of Artists for Frescobaldi. The three artworks competing are particularly significant: Ozzolas piece is characterized by an introspective vision, by the astral influence and the relationship between sky and earth; Elisa Sighicellis photo amazed me for its contrast between light and the material; and Rä di Martinos piece offered a surreal image, almost oneiric, of the Tuscan landscape. Im particularly happy because the three art works are going to be part of the Frescobaldis collection, enriching it with a contemporary sensation. The Jury decided to prize Elisa Sighicelli, an artist with a lot of talent and to whom I want to renew my most sincere congratulations and the most passionate wishes on the behalf of my whole family.
Analyzing the three pieces, Ludovico Presti added:
A places soul must be discovered in the same way as a persons soul. The words of James Hillman are an appropriate way to introduce these three artists and their interpretation of the commissions theme. Each of them has developed the theme in different ways but through the common language of the camera, in an interpretative and conceptual way. Each artist understands CastelGiocondo through a different point of view, and the choice of the jury has prized a piece that played on the overturn of the vision of a common object, which the artist has transformed into a kind of optical machine dominated by a seductive ambiguity.
In April 2013, to celebrate the works of art created for Artists for Frescobaldi, three magnums of CastelGiocondo Brunello di Montalcino 2008 will be presented at Vinitaly in Verona with limited edition labels for each of the three artists.
Angelo Tecce, Director of Castel Sant Elmo and one of the judges for the competition, commented, Elisa Sighicelli chose the barrel as an object that for symbolical and anthropological reasons describes a very Italian story. The artist wanted to overturn the emptiness of a container from the inside, turning it into a new powerful eye which fathoms in a real vision, made of light and colors. A photographic image, measured and essential, that denotes, as the artist herself says, an ambiguity deeply ingrained in todays existence.
Another judge, Director of Centro Culturale Contemporaneo Strozzina Franziska Nori added, What is amazing in the composition of the image is how the artist chooses to extrapolate a single characteristic element of the place, an object with concrete functions, and make it the subject of an art work with an abstract aesthetic, providing us with a meta-narration.
