MEDIA ALERT: Ancestry.com to Publish First Images From the 1940 U.S. Census and Unveil Free Access to 1 Billion Records By marketwire

PROVO, UT -- (Marketwire) -- 04/01/12 --

Who: Ancestry.com is the world's largest online family history resource

When: April 2, 2012, 5:00 AM EDT/ 2:00 AM PDT

Where: www.ancestry.com/1940

Background: The release of 1940 Census marks the first time in 72 years this information has been made available to the public, unveiling a unique snapshot of the United States when the country was emerging from the Great Depression but not yet involved in World War II. For the nearly 90 percent of Americans who either have family members in the 1940 Census or are in it themselves, this valuable collection will provide essential information to help them expand on (or begin) their family history search.

At 12:01 AM on Monday, Ancestry.com will pick up the 1940 Census from the National Archives in Washington, D.C., and immediately began processing the documents at the company's facility in nearby Silver Spring, Maryland. Due to the overwhelming interest in the 1940 Census release, Ancestry.com is making an unprecendented effort to upload the Census and provide the first images live on their site. The initial group of images will be available early Monday morning at www.Ancestry.com/1940, making Ancestry.com the first place to get a glimpse of the invaluable collection. Images from Washington, D.C., Delaware and Nevada are scheduled as the first to be available. More than 10,000 images, including those of many celebrities listed in the Census, will be rolling live within the early morning hours with over 100,000 expected by day's end.

Ancestry.com is working to get all 3.8 million images online as quickly as possible and a fully indexed 1940 Census will be available before the end of the year, allowing users to easily search and find information. The entire 1940 Census record collection will be free to access through the end of 2013. Ancestry.com will also be introducing innovative new viewing technology that will greatly help family history researchers discover new information in the 1940 Census. This new technology can be previewed in the 1930 Census, which is currently available for free on Ancestry.com or seen at www.ancestry.com/1940.

In recognition of this momentous event, Ancestry.com is providing free access to 1 billion hand-selected records from the 1940s. Anyone can use these records to find names, dates, births, marriages, military service and more about their families. Family history researchers can then use those details to locate their family in the 1940 Census. Access to the 1940's era records is free from April 2 through April 10.

Statement: "Ancestry.com is putting every ounce of its resources into bringing the 1940 Census to life as quickly as possible. There is such great interest that we feel compelled to work through the night to serve these images as quickly as possible," said Tim Sullivan, CEO of Ancestry.com. "During the coming months as the 1940 Census information is indexed and provided to the public, amazing family discoveries and revelations will be made."
