SUBJECT: Should I jump to PC? (Laptop only)
KEYWORDS:
I'm so disgusted with apple and final cut pro right now that I need to take a step back before I answer...

You know I've had PC's and macs side by side for a while now, and I can tell you with confidence that for moving around in the editor in 3D applications PC's are WAY faster. Apple has ignored openGL for a long time, and it shows. Rendering speed is pretty close between my P4 3.2 with HT turned on and my Dual 2 gig G5. And both of those are MUCH faster than my dual 1 gig G4.

To get any kind of decent performance on a PC (laptop or tower) you're going to spend AT LEAST 2 grand to 3 grand (about as much as a G5) but that being said, you can get a pretty good machine for about half that which you can't do on the Mac.

PC's are a pain in the ass to maintain. They're prone to viruses and spyware and they do crash alot but the 3D performance can be worth the hassle. Macs are much easier to keep running, but when they break, apple's support is TERRIBLE, and don't even think about getting "Pro" support for the supposedly "Pro" apps like final cut. You'll pay anywhere from 200 to 800 bux to talk to someone at apple that can even remotely help you. Microsquish is just as bad though.

In general all computers suck. The hype machine has been working overtime on both sides of the fence, and I'm getting fed up with all the talk of "real time" this and "blazing" that and "blinding" this. Just give me a computer that works dammit!
