They way I figure it is, the Nano commercial is shot with dancers holding L.E.D lights. Those lights are tracked using a 3d tracking program like Boujou or Match Mover or PFTrack. Once the 3d info is attained, I would use something like particular in After Effects or the Mograph tracer in Cinema. Ethier-Or you will need the paths to be particles.

once the particles are following your 3d info it's just a matter of making those particles emit a solid stroke.

And that's how I would do it.
