SUBJECT: My Improved Waterfall
Hey Steve,

Well, it took a lot of time but I learned lots & lots doing this one. The "banding" problem I was having at the tops of the fall was actually being caused by the underlying rock terrains behind the falls and beneath the upper level water not meeting in a proper miter. There was a gap and since the water itself was very transparent, the reflection off the water caused the gap to show through as a "band". Tightened that up and eliminated that problem. Creating the splash with spheres was the big chore. Ended up with 9 larger elongated spheres and about 18 smaller round spheres filled with a cloud material - it was the placement of these that was tough for me. I duplicated the falls terrain and enlarged it very slightly and filled it with tea kettle steam cloud material. This gave the falls a depth they hadn't had before, so they don't look like just water running down some walls now. With the splash and the spray in place, I was able to eliminate the fog I had placed in the "pool" to simulate spray and this revealed the swirly turbulent water better which gives more of a feeling of movement. These changes made a significant difference. This was a fun fix and I learned like crazy while doing it. Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction, I really appreciate it!

Mike-

Wow- what a difference, huh? Cool! And learning and messing with something- that's the best way to learn Bryce if you ask me. And I'm glad that you had fun while you were doing it- that made my day to hear, it really did.

Now- here's another challenge for ya which will improve that picture- start messing with the water that's in the bottom pool to try to get a different effect to it. One thing right off the bat that I can see that would make a big difference, and an easy enough fix- go into the material editor and increase the frequency, more or less change the overall scale of the material so that instead of HUGE swirls as they are now, try changing it to a bunch of smaller ones, if you follow that.

Also- try messing with the water coming off the falls- try to make it more "white" and less transparent, since very few falls are crystal clear.. just some more things to tinker with.

Thanks for letting us take a look at this updated version- it's cool!

Steve

Yes indeed it did come out nice. You did a wonderful job with the spheres, and

the mist thing was a great idea. Glad to see you figured out the band problem. I

worked at a waterfall last night but ended up scraping it. The tutorial is one of the

better ones I've seen, I just need to try harder. I'll get back to it latter, but right

now there's a few other things I've been wanting to do. Need to do em while the

inspiration is strong. If you know what I mean.
