Here's my first try at lighting the cave. The smoke gel came out darker then I

wanted, so I'll give it another go after I finish the pic I'm working on now. Any

comments?

Hey Stephen,

You might want to check the spelling of the WWUG on that page- you have it as WWGN, which I think is a radio and television station of out Chicago. =)

As for the render- my first impressions- it's a little too bright. Unless this is some sort of fog, there wouldn't be anything like it underground. Unless someone up ahead is a really heavy chain smoker. <G>

You did do this as a volumetric world render, which I'm guessing is why it's as hazy as it is. I've personally only done ONE volumetric world render to date, and it was this same scene actually, and it took over a month of rendering at nights to finish.

Things to possibly try- dimming the lights down so that you get less overall light in the cave. Since you made use of the hole in the ceiling, it'd be really cool to get the light to really show as streaming in from that hole.

If you've never been there yet, Peter Sharpe has a tutorial that just might give you some ideas to play with. http://www.petersharpe.com/Tutorial12.htm

Also, I've got some links to some other tutorials here: http://www.hilltopdesign.com/brycematerial/index.html

Keep us posted on how it goes- how's everyone else doing with this? Post your URL's!

WWGN where did that come from, never even been to Chicago. I check out

Peters tutorial a while back. Haven't ever done a volumetric render. This is the

kind of scene I think one would look good in. Anyway it's good practice learning

to set it up for one.

Haha! I know, sometimes I type things and later look at it and just go "Huh? Where did that come from??" Just one of those things I guess.

I like this one much better- it looks more realisic. It's also cool the way the light you have added really brings out the detail of the walls. Looking cool!

Are your as amazed as I was at how moving that light just a little one way or another totally changes the scene? Lighting just makes or breaks a scene, and this is a pretty good way to get a feel for it.

Are you going to try a volumetric version? Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. I just hope your machine is faster than mine. Rendering every night for over a month is a bit absurd...

Yea I'm going to try another volumetric render, I want to try and set the light where

it dissipates before it reaches the floor. I have 2 puters networked together. 1 has a

166 pcu (slow) the other 500 pcu , the last V render took 3 days on the slow

puter. I've been rendering another pic at night and while I'm at work on the 500

pcu, been 36 hours and still hasn't hit AA yet. So it might be a while till I do the

next V render.

here are some of the ones I've done. I've got a vague idea of what the lighting conditions are for all of'em... most of them are pretty dark, too...

1. brightish, greenish radial light in distant left of the cave, miscellaneous other tinted radials around (3 or 4 I think...)

http://www.best.com/~calyxa/pearl/0images/wwcc1.jpg

2. an array of 3 differently tinted square spotlights pointing into the cave from behind the camera

http://www.best.com/~calyxa/pearl/0images/wwcc2.jpg

3. same array of spotlights from 2, moved to point in the left 'opening' in the back of the cave:

http://www.best.com/~calyxa/pearl/0images/wwcc3.jpg

4. some combination of copies of that group of spots from 2 and 3, with at least one or two radials thrown in...

http://www.best.com/~calyxa/pearl/0images/wwcc4.jpg

5. same lights as in #3, plus two radials. volumetric world (but set really low on both the density and quality scales).

Are you on a mac? I am Pc. I must not have something set right for my monitor. Every pic comes up so dark I can hardly make out what I am supposed to be seeing.

Hi Kathi,

Well, I'm on a PC, and there is always a difference with the gamma between the two. I can't remember if I enabled gamma correction in that scene file or not... might want to check that gang.

How do you enable gamma correction?

On the main screen, there's a series of small triangles along the left side of the preview. The very bottom one, which is just to the right and below the trackball- click it and that's the place to change all the fun settings like gamma correction, anti-alias settings, etc.

And I HATE that interface when you're trying to tell someone where something's located! ARGH! "Click the spinny dealie next to the whitish swirl thing while you hold the secret key combination". = )

Hope that helped,

Steve

LOL, have we met before? Perhaps at the "Trying to describe what it is I am looking at THINGY"? Thanks for the tip. ?Wondered what that was for. Now I know(I think) that gamma correction is for the difference between PC's and MAC's. If I am on a PC, and I select the gamma correction, it will correct itself for those viewing my pic with MAC's...Is that right?

Hey Kathi,

Haha! It's quite silly... which makes creating tutorials so much more challenging. Whenever I do a tutorial, I use lots of pretty pictures. <G>

The gamma correction should help across the board, although I've done a few scenes where I turned it off, since it really changed the look I was striving for. Generally, I guess you can just set it to on and leave it at that.

One thing too, mentioned in the spirit of "just in case ya didn't know" category:

If you start Bryce, make all the changes you'd like to make for starting new scenes- set the camera position you'd like to start with, set the sky, turn the autokey animation feature on or off to suit your tast, etc. Then save that scene with a file name called default

That way- every time you start up, it'll load that scene, and all your favorite things will already be set!

If you already knew that, go ahead and slap me around a little... <G>

I knew that, but what I don't know how to do is set my scene to a N,S,E,W position. What would the coordinates for the camera be? If I wanted the camera in the South pole facing North. Which way do you have yours?

I have a scene set up right now as my default, but I am not happy with the way it turned out. If I delete that scene, will Bryce create a new default file?

monitor set dark. Out of all of them I like the last one on the list best.

Hey Calyxa,

Wow- isn't it weird how something so simple can be so darned tough to get good results? =) I spent a lot more time playing with this scene myself, and I've yet to do one that I'm happy with. The last one you posted is my favorite:

http://www.best.com/~calyxa/pearl/0images/wwccbig.jpg

The amount of ambient light is cool, the way you lit up that little patch of water is a nice touch, and the light spilling onto the left wall looks good.

Now the really weird thing, which I see in yours too, although you did get better results than I did- the far wall at the very back is quite a way in the distance, but I've yet to figure out how to get this to actually show up- it's kind of lost as far as the depth. Looks like I'll have to mess with this thing myself to see if I can figure out how to get this to work better.

One heck of an interesting little challenge, isn't it? <G>
