SUBJECT: Light The Cave Challenge
And quite a challenge it is, too! Learned a lot about lighting this week - not too tough since I didn't know much to begin with, lol. I used only two lights. Both visible volume lights with infinite light checked and both with ranged falloff set to end at the water level. One is a radial at the front between the beginnings of the two side walls and set higher than the camera, with intensity set at 6, edge set at 2 and an orangey yellow color. The other is a spot set at the top rear of the left wall and aimed sort of at the rear wall, intensity set at 5, edge set at 2 with an orangey yellow color.

I fooled with positioning that spot for a few hours, then when I was just about done the light ray suddenly appeared. It took 16 hours to render. Fun project!

Mike

I like it, so the light ray just happened. Sometimes some cool effects come from
nowhere. I guess that's to make up for the times some undesired effects happen. I render my pics at 768 X 512 so you can't see the edges as it's rendering. Sometime after it's done it's ahhhh were did that come from.

Thanks, Steve! Heheh, yup, that's what happened. I had just saved everything and was ready to render and I thought, try moving that light one last time; if it's no good I can go right back to the saved version. I moved it just a hair and that ray popped up. I like your concept that cool accidents like that make up for the attempts that turn out to be messes, though, lol. Sort of like Bryce Karma, huh?!? I like that idea!

Mike-
Wow- what a difference, huh? And yeah, that's the thing that kills me with Bryce- you screw with it for hours (or in my case DAYS) and all of a sudden- BINGO! Or- when it's done, you see something there and you can't figure out where it came from! I've got a few images that had things showing up in them, and for the life of me, I can't figure out where it's coming from. But- that's part of the charm of the program I guess.
Glad you had some fun with it- that's always a nice plus!
Speedy renders,
Steve

Hey Steve,
Thanks! Yeah, Bryce does seem to have a way of making you think there's a higher power controlling things inside that computer sometimes, lol. These challenges are a great idea for learning new things. Gets you thinking about things you hadn't thought about before. And it's always great to look at how everyone else approaches the same thing and say, "Wow, that looks great! I would never have thought about doing that!" Looking forward to seeing more posts.

Mike
