Ok. Just out of curiosity (mine, not Spacewards) how many of you would like to see Satori for Linux?

Adam.

Satori for Linux would be perfect. Working with images in windows often leeds to a need to re-boot, however in linux (i use the gimp) this is never needed. Satori for Linux would lead to a huge un-tapped market for Spaceward graphics and i urge them to get started !!

I have never had a crash or had to reboot because of Satori (even with large images). But I have always used NT4 or Win2k. Win9x and ME or not suitable for serious work in my experience.

This is a most interesting post

As many of you will already know, we have considered a port to Linux for some time but the level of user and publisher interest has to-date been most dissapointing.

If you feel that we should publish a Satori for Linux then please submit your interest by sending your email to Linux@satoripaint.com

We would also welcome any recommendations you may have for potental Satori distibutors and/or publishers in the Linux market.

Thank you

Mark Lister

Adam, I think this is a damn fine idea, even though I don't yet use Linux (probably because Satori is not yet available for that OS)(!)

Rock on...

Hi Michael.

It seems from converstaion I have had that more people would like a Mac port. This probably makes sense financially as well.

Linux is interesting because it allows people to use relatively cheap hardware (compared to Mac). The high-end 3d apps are all porting or have ported. But they are also porting or have ported to Mac OSX as well.

I am sick of Win2000's relatively poor multitasking and I don't like what MS has in store for the future with this hardware key garbage. I was hoping that BeOS would take off but that's not going to happen now. QNX is nothing special in my mind. And Apple won't port OSX to Intel because MS has them by the b@lls (they have given Apple a slew of cash). So that leaves Linux on X86, Mac, SGI and SUN. And I am not going to fork over the cash for either of the latter two.

Hi Adam,

I would also like to see Satori ported to GNU/Linux even though I don't use it at the moment.

Everything that I have read and heard about GNU/Linux (and the way Microsoft is behaving) has convinced me that I should switch. I'm just waiting for the applications I use to be ported.

You (we) may be waiting a long time. What apps do you use other than Satori?

Adam.

Lots, but some of them are ported onto GNU/Linux, and for some there are free software alternatives.

Apart from Satori there are 2 products running only on Windows which I really would like to keep: Dragon Naturally Speaking and Net Objects Fusion.

A solution is to run Windows in a virtual machine under GNU. Another is to use "Wine" which implements the Windows API (Application Programming Interface) allowing Windows programs to run under GNU.

Installing and configuring all that is the sort of job which can wait untill there's a fortnight of really lousy weather in January!

I wouldn't want to run Wine or VMWare or similar. Too much to deal with. Really, if I can't run an application natively I won't bother.

Linux is still a little problematic. It doesn't have the best font rendering, is more difficult to administer etc.... But it might be worth the effort of the right applications were available.

Adam.
